Position Summary
BAAC Construction is hiring a full-time experienced HDD Driller to support fibre optic and underground utility installations across Western Canada.
In this role, you will independently operate horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment and perform precision drilling in remote, residential, commercial, and high-congestion environments. You will play a key role in delivering safe, accurate, and production-driven fibre installation projects.
This position is best suited for a skilled operator with strong drilling experience, solid safety practices, and the ability to work independently in fast-paced field conditions.
Location
- Reporting office located in Calgary, Alberta
- Projects across Western Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and BC) with daily Living Out Allowance provided for projects outside of Calgary

What You'll Do: HDD Drilling
- Perform horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for fibre optic and underground utility installations
- Accurately locate drill heads and existing utilities in congested residential and urban environments
- Read and interpret:
- Drill profiles
- Design drawings
- Locate sheets
- Safely navigate and avoid existing underground infrastructure
Site Operations & Field Execution
- Conduct pre-job inspections, hazard assessments, and ground disturbance checks
- Set up drill paths, entry/exit pits, and work zones safely and efficiently
- Operate support equipment (asset), including:
- Mini-excavators
- Hydrovac / vacuum trucks
- Hand tools
- Work collaboratively with crew members to maintain clean, organized, and productive job sites
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all BAAC safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Complete required documentation, including:
- FLHAs (Field Level Hazard Assessments)
- Tailgate meetings
- Digital reporting (Workhub / Bamboo)
- Apply Ground Disturbance Level II practices and environmental protection standards
- Proactively identify hazards and maintain a strong safety record
Quality & Production
- Ensure accurate drill depths, bore paths, and pullback methods
- Troubleshoot:
- Ground conditions
- Drill performance issues
- Locating challenges
- Deliver work to FTTH (Fibre-to-the-Home) industry standards with minimal rework
- Communicate clearly with supervisors, locators, and clients to ensure job success
What You Bring - Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of HDD drilling experience
- Proven ability to independently drill and locate in congested residential environments
- Strong understanding of:
- Fibre optic construction
- FTTH installation standards
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (or higher) with clean abstract
- Ability to tow equipment
- Current certifications:
- Ground Disturbance Level II
- Standard First Aid
- Confined Space certification is considered an asset
Technical & Field Skills
- Experience operating HDD drilling equipment independently
- Ability to read construction drawings and locate plans
- Experience with support equipment (mini-excavator, vacuum truck) is an asset
