The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is a specialized unit designed to care for critically ill or injured patients whose conditions are life threatening and who require comprehensive critical care and constant monitoring. The Unit is a closed 14 bed Level 3 ICU unit supported by Intensivists, and a multidisciplinary team consisting of Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Social Workers and a clerical team. The Intensive Care Unit provides evidence based specialized care to patients through state-of-the-art monitoring systems, critical care technology, and professional expertise.   The Unit is equipped for arrhythmic and hemodynamic monitoring along with ventilator capability. The ICU provides services that range from post-surgical care for adults, to medical supportive care for critically ill patients admitted from the Emergency Department, In-Patient Unit or transferred from our regional partners.  The ICU also has a Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT).

Respiratory Therapy

The Respiratory Therapy Team provides diagnostic and therapeutic services within the ICU and throughout the hospital by providing specialized respiratory care and airway management to patients with compromised cardio-respiratory status and related respiratory conditions.  The team works closely with Physicians, Clinicians and patients, and plays an active role in CCOT and Code Blue.
